Do you need to give red envelopes for Chinese New Year?

Lai See (利事) aka Hong Bao (紅包) "red pockets" are a central part of Chinese New Year culture. There is money in the Lai See, but it's not able collecting the most money, but about the social interactions and smiles that are generated in the ritual.
