Why has China, a much larger country, never invaded Japan?

Countries do not invade each other for fun. Except the Mongols.

China thought it was the centre of the universe and Japan was a barbarian land on the fringes. China was a land rich in human and natural resources. Up until opium was introduced to China, the government thought that China and its people had everything it ever needed domestically. There was no incentive to leave China or colonize far away lands.

The Yuan Dynasty (with a Mongolian Emperor) did try to invade Japan twice. While successful on the battlefield, logistics were disrupted by typhoons, twice. This doomed the invasion attempts, and the Yuan gave up after that. The Japanese called these the 'divine winds' (かみかぜ 神風 kamikaze).
